Biography

I was born in London in 1941 in the middle of an air-raid! I didn’t like school very much and was more interested in reading, going to the cinema and playing with my friends out on the street or on the many bomb sites that existed after the Second World War. When I left school I worked in an advertising agency for two years. I enjoyed the work a lot but eventually I decided that I wanted to study English at university so I quit the job and set about catching up with the exams I hadn’t got at school. Meanwhile I worked as a road-sweeper for six months and then another six months as a swimming pool lifeguard while I studied for my exams. I eventually got a place in a teacher training college where I did a degree in English – although I had no interest in teaching. I hadn’t realised, though, that I would be expected to do teaching practice out in schools. Almost as soon as I stood in front of a class I loved it and, once I was qualified, I taught for ten years in a school in Tonbridge. While I was teaching I wrote my first book. I continued as a part time teacher for another six years but, more and more, I concentrated on writing until eventually I gave up teaching altogether. I did a year acting at one time but since then I’ve been writing full time. I’m married and live in East Sussex.
